L’as du Fallafel, in the rue des Rosiers, in the heart of the old Jewish quarter, is peerless for sandwiches to go. On a sunny day, take your sandwich over to the Place des Vosges and enjoy it on a park bench as you watch the Parisian children playing in the park.

The fallafel sandwichs at L'as du Fallafel contain super crisp, garlicky chickpea fritters, with creamy hummus, lightly pickled red cabbage, salted cucumbers, fried eggplant and harissa.  All this is piled into a pita in such quantities that eating it is an adventure in napkin management.

Although you can eat it inside (the tables are cramped and the service is busque-but not unfriendly), the sandwich begs for it to be eaten outside.

For meat lovers, a similar sandwich, the shwarma, is packed with lamb and is delicious.

L'as du Fallafel is a good place to go on Sunday, when the rue des Rosiers is buzzing, and the rest of Paris is quiet.
